What is AI visibility, and why it matters for DTC brands

AI visibility is how often, and how accurately, AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini name your products when shoppers ask about your category. It matters because more shoppers now get a short list of products from AI instead of a page of links.

What AI visibility means

AI visibility is how often, and how accurately, AI assistants name your products when a shopper asks about your category. It has three parts. The first is whether you get named at all when a shopper asks for recommendations, say "best vitamin C serum for sensitive skin". The second is whether you get cited as a source, so the assistant links back to your product or guide pages. The third is whether what the assistant says about you is correct: your price, your ingredients, your sizing, who the product is for.

A store can be strong on one part and weak on another. You might be named but described with a return policy you changed a year ago. You might be accurate on your own product pages but never named in a recommendation because nothing outside your store backs you up. All three matter, and the free audit measures each of them.

How shopping behaviour is shifting

Shoppers increasingly start with an assistant instead of a search box. Adobe found that 39% of US consumers already use AI to help them shop, and that share is climbing. Instead of opening ten tabs and comparing, a shopper asks one question and gets a short list of products with reasons attached.

That traffic also behaves differently once it arrives. Across 94 stores studied by Visibility Labs, visitors from ChatGPT converted at about 1.81%, compared with 1.39% for non-branded Google organic. Shoppers who arrive from an assistant have usually already been given a reason to trust the product, so they are further along in deciding.

Why AI visibility is not the same as Google rankings

Search engine optimization aims to rank your page in a list of blue links. The shopper still clicks through and makes up their own mind. Generative engines skip the list. They read many sources, decide which products to name, and hand the shopper a short answer. There is often no list to climb.

That changes what wins. Ranking first for a keyword does not guarantee you get named in the answer about that keyword. Assistants lean on product structured data, clear factual copy, reviews and third-party mentions more than on the signals that move traditional rankings. You can rank well on Google and still be invisible in AI shopping answers.

What it looks like when you're invisible

There are three common ways this costs a store sales:

  • You're missing. A shopper asks for the best option in your category and the assistant names three competitors. You are not one of them, and you never see the lost sale in your analytics.
  • You're described wrong. The assistant gets your price, ingredients or sizing wrong, or repeats an old Reddit complaint, and the shopper moves on.
  • You're losing the comparison. When shoppers ask how you compare to a competitor, the answer is built from pages your competitor wrote or influenced, and your side of the story is not there.

Why it compounds

AI visibility is not a one-time race. Assistants keep drawing on the sources that already name you: the gift guides you are listed in, the reviews shoppers leave, the comparison pages you publish. A store that gets named this quarter tends to get named again, because the inputs that earned the mention are still there and keep being cited.

That is why the stores that invest early tend to pull ahead. The work is cumulative. Clean product data, pages that answer real questions, genuine reviews and honest outside mentions keep paying off long after they ship, while a competitor who waits has to build all of it from zero.

How to check yours in 10 minutes

You can get a rough read quickly: open ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, ask ten questions a shopper in your category would ask, and write down who gets named. If competitors keep showing up and you do not, you have a visibility gap worth fixing.

FAQ

Is AI visibility only for big brands?

No. Smaller DTC stores often have an advantage, because clean product data and genuine reviews matter more to an assistant than brand size.

How fast does it change?

Store and product fixes can move answers within weeks. Reviews and outside mentions build over months.
